I post this several weeks in arrears, however, we came face to face with catastrophe and we persevered. On March 28, while hanging lights in the sunroom, I look inside and to my surprise all I see is orange gleaming from the kitchen. Immediately drop everything, yell for Becky to exit the bathroom and we put the fire out with the extinguisher. A cast iron had some crusted sediment on the bottom of the pan, and while Becky was using the restroom, the sediment caused a spark that started the fire.
Fortunately the only damage was the microwave that melted and the glass for the oven breaking. The cabinets began to burn, but not quite enough to catch fire. We were probably 30 seconds away from an absolute catastrophe.
Some key learnings:
- Don't leave heated oil unattended.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
- In the presence of danger, remain calm.
- Realize that things are replaceable, loved one's are not.
While I don't want it to occur again, it was a good experience given that we were prepared. Brought the world into perspective and we will be safer with new precautions (smoke detector in the kitchen.)
